Safety on the Water

Safety on the Water

Sailing is a brilliant sport for people of all ages to get involved in but it is not without it dangers. Before getting in a boat there are certain basic safety rules that must be understood to help prevent unnecessary accidents and to be able to deal efficiently with any problems that do occur.

Basic boat knowledge

You might not have your sea legs just yet but there is no excuse getting into a boat without a basic knowledge of boats and sailing. One of the most important things that any boatman should have is a knowledge of the basic knots used in sailing, how the sails work and where the equipment is kept on the boat.

Be aware of the size of your boat and think carefully about electrical cables that are overhead as these are extremely dangerous.

Safety Equipment

When setting out to sail it is important to have the correct safety equipment on board particularly if you are venturing further out to sea. Make sure that you have a working maritime VHF radio; communication is of huge importance in an emergency. This type of radio can be tracked by the coast guard helping them get to you more quickly. Always have a first aid kit and a compass and maritime maps if you are venturing further a field.

Sink or Swim

A vital piece of kit that should be worn at all times on a sail boat is a life jacket; even if you are a strong swimmer. A lifejacket will provide you with an extra feeling of security should you find yourself in the water, helping with buoyancy and keeping your mouth and nose out of the water.

Know your sea

One of the most important things to check before sailing around the UK is where the shipping lanes are because sailing into the path of bigger ships can be dangerous for both vessels. It can be quite distressing for the inexperienced and experienced sailor alike.

There are varying currents around the United Kingdom while some are mild many are strong and hidden always find out about the currents in the area of sea you will be sailing in. Find out how the currents are being affected by the weather that day, which leads onto our next important safety check.

Weather watching

This one might sound a bit obvious but each year the coastguard rescues lots of boats that have been caught up in storms or capsized by the adverse weather. Before you set out on a day’s sail check the shipping forecast and inshore wind and water forecast for any adverse weather warnings. Never go out if there are storm warnings!

In the brighter weather you will need a pair of sunglasses as the glare from the water can be blinding and painful on the eyes.

And remember never drink and sail!
