Much like ocean sailing gear, offshore marine clothing is extremely durable and provides an impressively high level of performance. This type of marine apparel is ideal for all yachtsmen regardless of experience and ability. Both professional and novice sailors can consider this type of clothing to be an excellent long term investment.
The design of offshore marine jackets differs slightly from the more basic inshore range. These items are generally shorter and may have a scoop feature at the bottom which makes the jacket lower at the bottom and provides a reinforced seat panel. The collar tends to be lower and a high visibility yellow hood ensures that the wearer really stands out no matter how severe the conditions. Other features will include fleece hand warmer pockets, and reflective strips.
Offshore trousers are extremely durable with reinforced seat and knee panels. Also available are offshore smocks, providing maximum protection to people working on the foredeck of the boat. With no zip, a seal at the neck and a neoprene seal at the bottom there is very little chance of any water getting in!
The construction of an offshore fabric is exactly the same as the ocean variety except the Gore-tex used will be slightly lighter. Although slightly less durable than ocean sailing apparel, it is worth noting that these garment will rarely encounter such harsh conditions at sea.
Good examples of offshore clothing are the Musto MPX range and the Henri Lloyd offshore and offshore racer range. Gore-tex fabrics are by far the best available on the market today, however there are other more affordable alternatives, such as the gill ocean/offshore range.
